Extracting a tooth is the last thing a dentist wants to do, however tooth extraction may be the best option if you have wisdom tooth pain, a severely decayed tooth, tooth trauma or another dental issue. In some cases, you'll notice a few signs that may indicate there is a dental problem. If you experience any of these signs, it's time to visit your Waterford, MI, dentist, Dr. Steve Rollins.
Pain can occur due to a cavity but may be caused by a more serious dental problem, such as:
- A Crack in Your Tooth: You may experience pain due to a cracked tooth. Cracks in the crown of the tooth, the part of your tooth that's visible, can often be treated by adding support to the tooth with a dental crown. Unfortunately, if the crack extends to the root(s), the tooth may not be savable.
- An Abscess: A painful bacterial infection in your tooth pulp is another reason that your tooth may need to be extracted. In many cases, abscesses can be successfully treated with root canal therapy and antibiotics. If these treatments aren't effective, it may be necessary to remove the tooth.
- Decay: Fillings usually offer a simple solution if you have a cavity, but it may not be possible to fill your tooth if you have extensive decay.
Trauma to the tooth can occur after an automobile accident, fall or some other kind of impact to the face. If the root canal therapy, splints or other treatments and procedures can't save the tooth, it may need to be extracted.
Wisdom teeth symptoms
Pain and swelling in your gums and jaws can occur if your wisdom teeth are fully or partially blocked by bone and gum tissue. Despite the lack of room in your mouth, these teeth will try to push their way through your gums unless they're extracted. Luckily, removing these impacted teeth doesn't affect your ability to bite or chew.
Removing several teeth before you begin orthodontic treatment may be recommended if your mouth is small. Your Waterford dentist will extract the teeth a few weeks before you receive your braces.
